It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Dr. Wale Sulaiman as Ochsner’s new Medical Director of International Medicine for the African Region. Dr. Sulaiman will continue in his role as System Chairman of Neurosurgery and Co-Medical Director of the Ochsner Neuroscience Institute.
Since beginning his role as Chair in 2011, Dr. Sulaiman has shepherded our Department of Neurosurgery during a period of unprecedented growth. His tenure saw the department gain numerous accolades from outside rating agencies including a U.S. News & World Report top 25 national ranking for neurology and neurologic surgery. As he takes on new responsibilities, Dr. Sulaiman will hand over the reins of the Neurosurgery Department Chairmanship to Dr. C.J. Bui who currently serves as Dr. Sulaiman’s Vice-Chair. In his continued role as System Chair of Neurosurgery, Dr. Sulaiman will focus on strategy, vision and recruitment across the regions. He will work closely with the Regional Medical Directors, CEOs and regional leads to help meet the goals of each region and the system.
Dr. Sulaiman completed a combined MD/MSc degree at Medical University in Varna, Bulgaria. His interests in nerve/spinal cord injury and regeneration led him to a research fellowship at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta where he earned a PhD in neurosciences. He then completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Dr. Sulaiman subsequently was awarded two additional prestigious clinical fellowships. He completed a fellowship in complex nerve reconstruction at Louisiana State University in New Orleans and a fellowship in complex spine surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He is board-certified in neurosurgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Sulaiman is a recognized expert in nerve and spinal cord regeneration and continues to lead an active translational research laboratory.
