Prof Ferdinand Ofodile joined ANPA very early on and given his strong academic bent, easily gravitated to become the first Chairman of our Education Committee , in which role he served for many years with distinction . Dr Ofodile has had a long and distinguished career in academics and was teacher and mentor to many. Over his career he held faculty positions at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria , Columbia University, New York, and was Harlem Hospital site Director : Columbia/ Cornell University Plastic Surgery Residency Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Now retired , he is a Clinical Professor Emeritus of Surgery at Columbia University . Dr Ofodile began his education at Government College ,Umuahia, where he was a star student and from where he was the winner of the coveted African Scholarship Program of American Universities ( ASPAU ). Over the next 6 years ( 1962 – 1968 ) , he earned his undergraduate and Medical Degrees from NorthWestern University in Chicago . He then completed a Plastic surgical residency at Columbia – Presbyterian Hospital in New York and a Plastic Surgery Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic , Rochester, MN. A trail blazing academic, to his credit are;
- The Ofodile Classification: An anatomic and morphological classification of black noses.
- The Ofodile Nasal Implant: A nasal implant for Rhinoplasty in Blacks and Hispanics
He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and in 1994 became only the second black person to be elected Fellow of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons – an exclusive and prestigious society of about 600 Plastic Surgeons . He has received numerous Awards and Recognitions including :
- Honored by the President of Nigeria (9/23/2013) for Achievements in the diaspora.
- Special NEADS Scholar : Nigerian Universities Commision
- Teacher of Year Award : Cornell / Columbia Plastic Surgery Residency Program.
In retirement , he has remained active in many civic and social organizations and has led medical missions to Nigeria, the Carribean and East Africa .He lives with his wife Caroline in New Jersey and they are blessed with four children.
