DrJohnsonOne of the unique features of ANPA at its inception was the soluble mix of the exhuberant idealism of its youth wing with the tempered and modulated counsel of some senior colleagues. Our honoree tonight, Prof Abiodun Johnson was of the latter spectrum . He came to ANPA after what was an illustrious academic career in Nigeria, where he had been teacher and mentor to many of ANPA’s new leadership. He was an early and strong supporter of ANPA and served selflessly on the ANPA Executive Board and other committees. To observe and work with Prof Johnson was a study on the virtues of humility.

Dr Johnson completed his early education at Igbobi College, Lagos, Nigeria. His medical education was at the University College Ibadan from where he earned his MB., BS and later M.D . degrees. He was a Resident [ Medicine& Pediatrics ] at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital , London , U.K. and University Hospital Ibadan. He later completed a Fellowship in Gastroenterology and Nutrition at Stanford University.

In his distinguished academic career he has held faculty positions at:

  1. University of Ibadan, Nigeria
  2. University of California, Berkeley
  3. Meharry Medical College, Tennessee
  4. And currently at Texas Tech University, Amarillo, TX where he is a tenured Professor of Pediatric Gastroenterology.

Before he left the University of Ibadan( in the mid – 1980s ) , he had risen through the ranks of Sub – Dean , Prof & Chairman Department of Pediatrics to become Provost of the College of Medicine (1984).

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians [ FRCP ] , the American Academy of Pediatrics [ FAAP ], the American College of Nutrition [ FACN ] and the West African College of Physicians [FWACP] to name a few.

He has won numerous Awards and Recognitions and has published over 75 articles and book chapters:

  • 2000 Convocation Lecturer, Faculty of Pediatrics, Nigeria post-graduate Medical College, University of Lagos College of Medicine
  • Deans Distinguished service award in Pediatrics, Texas Tech. University Health Sciences Center, Amarillo April 2014

His students and mentees acknowledge him for his academic rigor and excellence, and yes , I am told, remember him most fondly for his impeccable sartorial style and taste. Of all these accomplishments , Prof Johnson is most grateful and proud of his children, two of whom have “ followed him into the family business “ and are Internists and the third who is an Engineering executive at a major European firm. Prof Johnson continues to sing on the choir of his Epsicopal Church in Amarillo , TX .

We salute Prof Abiodun Johnson, clinician and scholar, teacher and mentor and an ANPA original ..
